Established in 1999, the Jack Petchey Foundation was established to enable young people to achieve their potential by inspiring, investing in, developing and promoting activities that increase their personal, social, emotional and physical development.
The Foundation funds a number of major programmes - all of which support young people throughout London and Essex. Our flagship programme is the Jack Petchey Achievement Award scheme.
It is run in almost 2,000 schools, colleges and youth organisations throughout London and Essex and contributes millions of pounds each year. The scheme is a reward and recognition initiative which enables schools and youth organisations to celebrate the achievements of their young people as well as receive additional funding.
Alongside the Achievement Award, the Foundation funds a number of other major programmes. Since it has been established, the Foundation has awarded grants totalling over £75 million.
Jack Petchey at Gable Hall
Gable Hall school runs the Jack Petchey Achievement Award scheme for students and the Leader Award scheme for staff. We are fortunate to be able to offer numerous Achievement Awards per school year and one Leader Award.
Achievement Awards

Young people selected should be those who have gone above and beyond, and achieved – perhaps where others thought they might fail. Winning an Achievement Award should mean different things for different people – it may represent a personal triumph against adversity, it may recognise a young person who has pushed themselves outside of their comfort zone, it may be the opportunity to recognise the outstanding efforts of a team player who always puts others first.
At the very heart of the Achievement Award is the fact that students at Gable Hall students are encouraged to nominate their peers, so recognising the hard work and efforts. Nominations are also accepted from staff and parents. Nominations are then reviewed by the Student Council, and a winner selected.
Winners are recognised at one of celebration assemblies, and will receive:
- A framed certificate and pin badge.
- A letter from Jack with card attached giving them the opportunity to join the JPF Achievers community.
- A copy of ‘Notes from Jack Petchey’ – a special A5 book with advice and guidance in the words of Jack himself.
- £250 to be spent on a something of their choice that will benefit their organisation; for example, a piece of equipment, a day out, or a specialist trainer to come in to give a session.
Award winners are further recognised by attending one of the Jack Petchey Celebration Events where they are congratulated on stage in front of friends and family.
Staff Awards
Linked to the Achievement Award scheme, the Staff Award enables Gable Hall to honour the dedication and commitment of staff and volunteers - particularly those who go 'the extra mile' to support young people.
The Foundation realises that lots of the great work, projects and schemes that young people are able to access and participate in, would simply not be possible without the support of their adult leaders. In recognising this, they created the Leader Award – a chance for young people themselves to recognise their leaders, the ones that inspire and support them – and say thank you.
Nominations and selection take place in the same way as for the Achievement Award, but can only be received from pupils of the school. The winners details are then sent to the Foundation for approval.
Winners of the Staff Award will be honoured at a Jack Petchey Celebration Event with a certificate and medallion.

Speak Out Challenge
On Friday 17th March 2023, all Year 10 students will be participating in an exciting educational experience run by the Jack Petchey Foundation with Speaker’s Trust.
Jack Petchey’s “Speak Out” Challenge! is a programme managed and delivered by Speakers Trust, the UK’s leading public speaking organisation and is supported and funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation. Their aim is to amplify young people’s voices by building confidence, developing skills and creating platforms for young people to share their stories and ideas to empower not only themselves but each other. In this way, they champion effective communication to use in education, employability and social change.
The in-school workshops are designed to allow students to create powerful speeches and present them to their peers. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to share their speech writing skills with their peers and students gain more vital speaking experience and build confidence in public speaking. This is also excellent preparation for the Spoken Language element of the English Language GCSE course.
